Sri Lanka is full of beautiful places, and if you’re staying somewhere on the South Coast, there are tonnes of day trips you can take. If you’re staying in Mirissa, you can rent a bike and reach almost everything between Galle and Tangalle within an hour. If your budget is not too tight, you can also choose to hire a tuktuk driver for the day. One of our favourite trips was the trip we took to Dondra Lighthouse. We actually went there twice. Once from Mirissa and once from Tangalle.
Dondra Lighthouse is a beautiful lighthouse located on Dondra Head on the south coast of Sri Lanka, and it’s actually one of the tallest lighthouses in Southeast Asia, so of course we wanted to check it out.

DONDRA LIGHTHOUSE ON SRI LANKA’S SOUTH COAST
Dondra Lighthouse can be found on Dondra Head – the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. This means that there’s nothing but water between Dondra Lighthouse and Antartica if you go (or, you know, swim) straight South, which we found to be kind of cool.
If you’re on the South coast of Sri Lanka, Dondra Lighthouse makes for the perfect stop on a day trip from either Unawatuna, Mirissa or Tangalle. We weren’t very lucky with the weather when we visited – and we actually went there twice because we really wanted to get some good pictures of the lighthouse on a nice and sunny day, but the weather elves tricked us both times and as soon as we got to the lighthouse, the clouds started rolling in.
Psssst! Did you read our post about amazing Tangalle?
Dondra Lighthouse is only about a 30 minute scooter drive East of Mirissa and a few kilometres outside of Matara. We went there on a day trip from Tangalle and decided to film the adventure – and all the obstacles we met along the way.
In the video, we also go to the amazing Goyambokka beach close to Tangalle. On our way back along the south coast, we wanted to check out Tallala Beach, but the weather wasn’t on our side, so instead we went to the wonderful Goyambokka Beach a few kilometres outside of Tangalle city.
